Overview

Honda Amaze is the brand's first compact sedan. With its unbelievable price and mileage, the car has been designed to meet small car norms of being less than 4m in length. It is even Honda's first car with diesel engine. The Amaze is basically a sedan version of the Brio, but looks proportionate, unlike few of its competitors. The new Amaze line-up is available in four variants E, S, SX and VX in both petrol and diesel guise. Transmission choices include a manual and a CVT options with latter available only on selected petrol trims. Honda Amaze petrol is powered by refined 1.2 litre i-VTEC and 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel motor giving a mileage of 17.8 kmpl and 25.2 kmpl respectively. Honda Amaze is accessible in 6 different colours - Alabaster Silver Metallic, Camellan red, Golden Brown Metallic, Tefeta White, Urban Titanium Metallic, White Orchid Pearl.

Exterior

Honda Amaze is 3990 mm long, 1680 mm wide, 1505 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2405 mm. For a compact sedan, it sits quite high with a ground clearance of 165 mm and will not get you stuck on any inclination at the road. The new thick horizontally slatted grille is typical of all new Honda cars. The front bumper has been completely redone and looks sporty with split air dam. The overall body-shell remains the same as older Amaze, except for the new design of alloy wheels. It gets two different alloys for petrol and diesel. The tail lamps have been reworked and give a fresh lease of life to the busy tail design. On the roof, a micro antenna has been placed at the back to provide better signals.

Interior

The 400 litre boot of the Amaze is largest in the segment - it is quite commendable considering the car is under four-meters in length. The dashboard gets new air con vents, dials and buttons on the changed centre console. The floor console gets three cup holders, coin holder and a useful cubby hole beneath climate control. Plastic quality has visibly improved. The instrument cluster is large and easily viewable. The cabin wears a dual tone colour theme featuring black and beige (beige more on a lighter side). In terms of space, the cabin scores well offering good room to passengers seated in front as well as at the back.

The dashboard of Amaze has been replaced with the more stylish version resembling the Honda City. The black-top dash gets silver accents around the rectangular AC vents along with a brand new centre console. It still misses out on the display screen for the infotainment system but gets a 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity. Steering mounted audio controls and automatic climate control is present. The beige interior makes the Amaze look luxurious and roomy.

Performance

Engines powering the petrol and diesel versions are taken from the predecessor. Petrol variants use a 1.2 litre i-VTEC petrol mill churning out peak power and torque of 87 BHP and 109 Nm respectively. While, diesel version houses Honda's 1.5 litre i-DTEC engine pumping out max power of 99 BHP along with 200 Nm of top torque. Both engines come mated to a five-speed manual gearbox along with an automatic transmission available only on the S and VX petrol variants. The engines have been tuned to deliver improved performance. Furthermore, the company claims to have worked on NVH level which has been reduced as compared to the previous model.

Handling of Honda Amaze is good and justifiable for its price segment. It is nimble and the steering is light. The car is predictable till a limit however, when pushed hard, the rear does step out. The car rides on 14 inch allow wheels wrapped with 175/65 tyres, though we feel that car does appear to be slightly "under-tyred".

Safety and Security

Amaze has ACE body structure making its chassis stronger. The petrol continues to miss out on ABS for the lower variants unlike diesel which has ABS and EBD standard. The higher-spec trims get dual front airbags. Honda is offering ABS on higher versions which help in emergency braking situations. The 175/65 R14 MRF tyres also work well and offer good grip during braking. Safety features in Honda Amaze include ABS, airbags, etc. The car has also been tested for crashworthiness.

Comfort and Convenience

Honda Amaze has new premium 3D speedometer with multi-function display. The cluster also has an eco-lamp for fuel efficient driving. It has convenient steering mounted control with tilt and telescopic adjustment. The ORVMs are electrically adjustable with electric folding. The top variants also get a driver seat height adjuster for more comfortable and convenient drive. The rear windshield is equipped with rear defogger giving you a better rear view in winters and foggy weathers for comfortable driving.
