Volkswagen unveils India-bound Virtus sedan

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the India-bound Virtus sedan. The Virtus is probably going to replace the Vento in several international markets. Volkswagen is probably going to venture in new markets with the sedan as well. The Virtus retains intricate design elements, such as the arrow shared arrow-shaped 'tornado' double-sided shoulder line, first seen on the all-new Polo.

The Virtus wheelbase measures 2,650mm, which is 80mm more than that of the Polo. The front styling and front doors are similar to the hatchback; however, thanks to the lengthened wheelbase, the rear doors are slightly bigger. It acquires a slanting roofline and a boot design borrowed from the recently revealed Areteon sedan. At the rear are stylish wraparound tail-lamps, again similar to those on the Areteon.

The Volkswagen Virtus depends on the same MQB A0 stage that underpins the sixth-generation Polo, which was revealed in June 2017. The MQB A0 stage is the smallest avatar of the German major's popular MQB platform.

The design of the Virtus is immediately observable as it has the face of the latest generation Polo where the signature elements consist of the single slat chrome grille, rectangular LED headlamps. Additionally unique are the bumpers which get distinct creases along with subtle chrome bits and prominent housing for the fog lamps and reflectors at the front and rear, respectively. At first look, you can see the Polo in outline the distance to the C-pillar.

The inside of the Virtus is identical to the Polo and includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and up to 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, among others. As far as dimensions, the Virtus is bigger than the Vento and the Honda City as well.

For the South American market, the Virtus accompanies two motors - a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 117hp and 162Nm of torque, and a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol producing 128hp and 200Nm of torque. The 1.6 engine is mated to a five-speed automatic, while the turbo-petrol is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.
