Overview

Mahindra Scorpio has been one of the most successful models in the company's lineup. Getting inside, Scorpio is a delight and the company has taken good care by providing most suitable features that buyers look for at that price range. The SUV is available in a total of six trim grades with three engine tuning versions. It is also offered in 2WD (two-wheel drive) and 4WD (four wheel drive) options, thereby proving the SUV's off-road prowess. The new generation Mahindra Scorpio claims to deliver fuel efficiency of 15.37 kmpl, which is a considerable increase compared to the 11.2 kmpl. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is a workhorse and known for its heavy-duty performance. Mahindra Scorpio is accessible in 4 different colours - Mist Silver, Molten Red, Napoli Black and Pearl White.

Exterior

Mahindra has made extensive changes to the styling of the current generation Scorpio. The model was introduced in an all-new avatar in 2014 and received modern touches including the new LED daytime running lights (DRLs), while the grille is more upright and looks bolder than ever. The bonnet is now flatter and wider in stance and gets masculine lines for that butch appeal. Mahindra has added new flared wheel arches and supporting lines on the sides, while the rear sports a conspicuous spoiler atop. A black garnish now rests on the tailgate that also holds the number plate with the D-shaped LED tail lights. The 17-inch alloy wheels on the Scorpio complement the design well.

Interior

Mahindra Scorpio comes with a four-spoke power steering that gets audio controls, automatic climate control, height adjustable driver's seat, front seat armrests and fabric upholstered seats. Customers also get electrically adjustable ORVMs, follow-me-home headlamps, anti-pinch power windows, charging points for first and second row as well as cruise control. The SUV also comes with rain and light sensors and is accessible in four colour options. The utilitarian look made way for a more premium version including a dual-tone colour scheme and a slew of additional features. In terms of space, the SUV offers enough room to passengers seated inside. There are practical storage points as well across the cabin.

Performance

Mahindra Scorpio is slowly turning out to be a beast in the affordable 7-seater SUV segment. It has a powerful engine working under the hood. Being such a big car, it is smaller in power than many hatchbacks and the lack of enough power at your disposal will hurt your ride to some extent. The Scorpio rides on two tyre options including a P215/75 15-inch wheels on the base trims, while the top variants gets P235/65 17-inch radial tubeless tyres wrapped in alloy wheels. Apart from that, the ride quality of the car is extremely good. The interior seating is comfortable and annoying engine noise has been brought down considerably. The gear shifting is smooth and its acceleration is delightful excessively.

Safety and Security

Mahindra Scorpio is quite strong in terms of braking and safety, except the base model. The top-end Scorpio has dual safety airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and seat belt warning. ABS along with EBD (electronic brake force distribution) is also given in the top model. However, child safety lock and vehicle immobilizer are added as standard across all variants. Scorpio uses caliper type ventilated disc units at the front and rear gets drum brakes for effective stopping power. It includes a double wishbone type suspension up front and a rear multi-link coil spring setup at the rear. The Scorpio also comes with an anti-roll bar to reduce body roll on the SUV.

Specifications

Mahindra Scorpio is powered by the same tried and tested 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine, but the oil burner now comes in two states of tune - existing 120 BHP version and a tuned 140 BHP version. The former version develops 280 Nm of peak torque, while the more powerful version develops 320 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox. The base mode S3, on the other hand, gets the older m2DICR engine that makes 75 BHP. Mahindra Scorpio now comes with new 6th generation Borg Warner Turbocharger and 9.1 Bosch ABS.
