Tata Motors plans to downsize their diesel engines and bring them under 2000cc

Around a week ago, the Supreme Court of India had extended the temporary ban on registration of cars and SUV’s powered by diesel engines with 2000cc or above in New Delhi till April 30, 2016.

Consequently, Tata Motors has revealed that it is working on downsizing its diesel engines in order to work around the ban. Tata is planning to downsize its current diesel engine and bring them to below two litre capacity.

Girish Wagh, senior VP of programme planning and project management, passenger vehicle operation has commented that the company is re-engineering existing engines to reduce their displacement to below 2-litres.

The ban on registration of cars and SUV’s powered by diesel engines with engine capacity of 2000cc and above was first applied in December last year. It has affected sales for automobile companies offering bigger diesel engine powered vehicles in their portfolio like Tata Motors, Mahindra, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
