Supreme Court orders ban on sale of Diesel cars with 2,000cc or more Engine till March 2016

Supreme Court is on alert for maintaining the increasing pollution levels in Delhi. After Odd-Even policy suggested by Delhi government, the Supreme Court ordered to ban sale of all diesel cars having 2000cc diesel engine or more in Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region). This will be implemented for first three months from 1 January - 31 March 2016.

The order follows the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) order of stopping the registration of diesel vehicles from 11 December, 2015 - 6 January, 2016 and restricting renewal of registration of more than 10 year old diesel cars. The next hearing will be on 6 January 2016.

Apart from banning new car registrations, the Supreme Court also ordered to restrict entry of non Delhi bound trucks registered before 2005 in NCR. The Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) is hiked on light commercial vehicles up to Rs 1,400 and for trucks up to Rs 2,600.

The order was strongly opposed by homegrown Mahindra & Mahindra and other car dealers who then filed a plea that sale of diesel car manufactured in 2015 should be allowed as they would become obsolete next year.
