The Supreme Court extends ban on registration of diesel cars above 2000cc in Delhi-NCR until the next hearing on May 9, 2016

The ban on the registration of diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR has been extended for the second time. The Supreme Court of India, extended the ban on sale of diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacity over 2000cc in Delhi-NCR, until the next hearing which is likely to take place on May 9, 2016.

In a bid to tackle the rising pollution levels in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court had imposed a ban on the sale of diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacities over 2000cc. The ban was first applied on December 16 until March 31, 2016. However, on March 31, 2016, the Supreme Court extended this ban on diesel passenger vehicles until the next hearing, which took place on Saturday April 30, 2016.

Automakers such as Tata Motors, Toyota  and Mercedes-Benz India failed to get any stand from the ongoing ban on registration of passenger vehicles in Delhi-NCR region.

Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz India are some of the major automobile companies that have been effected most by this decision. According to the manufactures, continued ban on bigger diesel vehicles will create uncertainty and will also impact future investments in the Indian automobile industry.

While, some manufacturers has downsized their engine capacity to handle this situation. Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced a smaller, 1.9 litre diesel engine versions of its popular SUVs Scorpio and XUV500 for NCR market. Mahindra later also launched all new petrol engine in KUV100.
