The Supreme Court of India today, extended the ban on sale of diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacity over 2000cc in Delhi-NCR, until the next hearing which is likely to take place in April. Court has also extended the deadline for converting all diesel-run taxis such as OLA, into CNG in the NCT region by one more month until May 1.
Mahindra & Mahindra, Jaguar Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz India are some of the major automobile companies that have been effected by the three-month ban decision. According to the manufactures, continued ban on bigger diesel vehicles will create uncertainty and will also impact future investments in the Indian automobile industry.
Around 1,300-1,500 vehicles are registered in Delhi every day, in which a substantial share is for diesel vehicles. Total passenger vehicles sold in 2013-14 were 25,03,509 units, in which again diesel had a major share. The Supreme Court decision on continued ban on higher capacity diesel vehicles will definitely create uncertainty for some of the major car manufactures in Indian market.
